Grab a Paddle and Hop in Trinity's Dragon Boat!
Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm join Trinity on the Chattahoochee for Columbus' annual Dragon Boat race! For just $30 YOU can secure your spot in a 45 foot sleek boat donned with dragon heads, tails, and scales and celebrate a more than 2,300 year old tradition from ancient China! Trinity is looking for 26 people (no experience necessary!) to join Team Trinity; 20 paddlers (8 of whom must be women), 1 drummer, and 5 alternate paddlers. Participants must be 18 years or older. *Any age, size, ability and gender can learn to paddle on a dragon boat team.* Twenty paddlers are seated in 10 rows of 2 with a drummer sitting in the bow, facing the paddlers. The paddler's job is to paddle in unison with the entire team. The drummer's job is to beat the drum in sync with the paddlers and to motivate their team to the finish line. A steersperson (provided by the festival) stands in the stern of the boat, guiding the boat straight down the race course with a 10-foot oar. Paddles, life vests, boats, drums, and steerpersons will be provided to each team on the day of the race by High Five Dragon Boat. Each team will race in 3 heats (races), the course is 350 meters in a straight line with 3 lanes, and each team will have a 60-90 minute break between heats. For more information on this event click here to visit Uptown Columbus' site. To register please add your name to the signup sheet on the bulletin board in Trinity's foyer, or call Whitney at the Parish Office at (706) 322-5569. Make checks payable to Trinity Episcopal Church for the $30 registration fee and please be sure to clearly note in the memo section that it's for the dragon boat event.
We are also ordering "Team Trinity" t-shirts again this year for rowers, Team Trinity cheerleaders, and kids! Call Rickeya Parker at (812) 319-7105 or email her at (firstname.lastname@example.org) with your t-shirt size to register for Team Trinity A.S.A.P. - you will not want to miss this! The 2017 design is still coming together so we don't currently have an example or price but Rickeya will get you that info just as soon as it is firmed up. (Shirt orders are being accepted until Sunday, April 23 but don't wait!)
Don't want to race but want to be in on the action? Cheerleaders are needed too! Please come support Team Trinity by clapping and yelling from the riverbank! You do not have to be there all day - feel free to come and go as you please. The Dragon Boat Festival will be located at the Coca-Cola Space Science Center section of the RiverWalk, just south of Woodruff Park and the Eagle & Phenix Dam.
