El Refugio is a ministry that provides hospitality to families of men detained at Stewart Detention Center, in Lumpkin, Ga, one of the largest immigration detention centers in the country. They were recently given a new house, which will allow the ministry to expand and serve more families more comfortably. El Refugio also works with the Chaplain at Stewart to schedule visits to the men who don't have families to visit them.
Rev. Grace Burton- Edwards at St. Thomas has committed to taking groups from Columbus to Stewart Detention Center on a regular basis this year. The next visits will be on February 21, March 21, and April 18. To participate in one of these visits, you must sign up with the church office 10 days in advance so that the detention center wardens can approve the visit. Plan to bring a sack lunch since we do not know how long the visits will take. Each visit is limited to 10 participants. We do this to follow Jesus who said, "I was in prison and you visited me."
