Join Us: Virtual Discussion of 'Doctrine of Discovery'

We're taking the next three months to focus on the Indigenous people of this land we know as the United States of America. To understand issues of justice in this history, and today, we will begin by looking at the Doctrine of Discovery at our September 26 Striving for Justice Conversation.
We'll gather Sunday, Sept. 26 from 6:30-8 p.m. on Zoom.
Doctrine of Discovery: In the Name of Christ is a 43-minute documentary that teaches about the history of the Doctrine of Discovery, its basis in Christian theology, its effects on Indigenous Peoples today, and how we might start to undo it. That work requires that we begin with three questions:
- Whose land was this before European settlement?
- By what mechanism, and when, did people lose it?
- Where are their descendants today?
The film features interviews with Indigenous scholars, leaders and activists from around the world, as well as Christian theologians and pastors.
Register for our conversation HERE.
Then, sometime before Sept. 26, view the Doctrine of Discovery documentary for free right here.
Looking ahead:
On October 24, we'll turn to the legacy of Christopher Columbus and the annual October observance of Columbus Day. On November 28, just three days after Thanksgiving, we'll look at the Trail of Tears and learn more about the Muscogee tribe of the Southeastern Woodlands.
